You know there's a spin-off series of Läskimooses? It's called Tappavat Kädet and it's written and drawn by Leo Kuikka. So far 2 issues out and 3rd in the printer. Only 4 issues in this miniseries and the final issue should be coming out in september time of the comics festival here in Helsinki.

Working with this one has been cool and I would definetely want to try it with someone else. Maybe maybe. Excelsior!

I mentioned in one interview that the story keeps surprising me. Now it has done it once more. A new piece to the puzzle just emerged. This one won't be added to the main story but it goes to the book of additions although it's a major thing tying together the stories of the narrator and Adorno Naulastus. These small revelations.
I don't have many expectations that any reader will spot this one story addition. It will probably require a indepth reading. And few people will stay with the book for that long. But it'll be there.
Like the thing I placed in Silvia Regina in plain sight and don't think anyone spotted. In the Lauri Kenttä story there was something, some level hidden. And I worried a bit that it would be too easy to spot. Well to my knowledge it's still as hidden as it ever was. And it's probably not the only secret of that book destined to remain a secret.

End of this year I will have 360 pages left of the story, not counting the "notes". I have funding untill end of this year, roughly. Funding... I wouldn't worry so much except that it seems I'm slower when there's this uncertainty.
What about the story? I get very few comments. I think it's proceeding as planned. Do people even suspect there is a story? There is and a pretty straight forward for that matter.
Issue 36 which I'm working on currently... I changed my method. Usually after the script is finished I letter it to the panels. With this issue I 'm proceeding one page at a time. I do have a script but for some reason I haven't lettered it yet. Oh but there's a reason. This issue is really a culmination point of sorts and there's going to happen something with the writing. You'll see.

There's one major plotline, one of many, that was started in issue 12. Now in the forthcoming 2 issues it'll be reaching its conclusion...or close to it. A circle closes into a circle.

Working on issue 36. For some reason changed the grid to 6 panels/page. save space. Otherwise the issue would've taken two. Even now it's going to be 32. Ok I guess. Planning to finish first week of May. Then onwards. Issue 37 will then conclude chapter...I've lost track. Five or six. Cheers.

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

Been working on issue 36 for 4 days with 5 pages finished. Going smooth so far. The issue is going to be 32 pgs or so it looks like. It'll get slower real soon. This issue has some stuff I wanted to get into since issue 13 and here I am. Made even a small mistake that cost me an hour. Should double check everything, especially when time has gone by.
Meanwhile issue 35 is being scanned. First issue this year.

Thursday, March 16, 2017

Today I should:
- go through 20 or plus notebooks for upcoming texts
-read issue 35
-write second version of 36
So there...

Some years back I took a break from listening to opera. Can't remember any specific reason. Might've been when my son was quite small. I didn't stop buying cd's occasionally, but didn't seem to listen them with quite the same enthusiasm.
Anyways, now I notice it is back. I'm now listening those cd's I bought years back but didn't then quite dig in. There wasn't time, or patience. Now I feel I'm resiscovering the artform. Been listening to Schoenberg's Moses und Aron, Wagner's Rienzi, Händel's Orlando... and many more. And most of the other stuff I listen seems to pale in comparison (with a few exceptions: Coltrane for one)
In 2000 I wrote a libretto for an opera composed by Kimmo Hakola. Now I would'nt mind doing another. But then it would have to be a longer thing. Six hours maybe.

Don't tell anyone

I got a grant that will help me continuing working until september. And what I do first: I search for opera recordings I want to have. These days it's mostly Britten. Maybe Alban Berg's Lulu. Good.
But seriously, this grant takes some weight from my back. I will finish issue 35 next week and move along to 36 with no worries. And I'll keep going. Thank U.

Something I did

Paul Gravett kindly asked me to do a 2 pager for ArtReview magazine. Proud to be there.
This particular story takes place between a couple of panels in issue 23 of Läskimooses.
I have plenty of these "sidetrack" stories lined up for the notes-book I have planned after the main book. Additions and alternate versions...

Saturday, March 04, 2017

After läskimooses
1. The book I started, silvia regina themed stories...15 pgs finished
2. Stories in the manner of 14th of this month. Small nice book
3. Oh and my favorite..can't tell much. A set of comic books each one based on one book by... oh tell u later

After 2020 then.

Counting counting

What someone might miss is the thing that the thing (Läskimooses) has an actual ending. And it's coming up. But not soon enough not. Still at least 20 issues, but might be longer. And I'd like to compress the thing, but it's against the nature of the book. Oh well back to work.

What is this thing?  To be interested? Nothing else matters much.

But next year I have been teaching comics for 20 yrs. Heard some stories and seen them made into comics. And it's magic.

The leftover

Check the previous post. This was supposed to be in the upper part of the picture but was cut out (video). So it goes.

Trained monkey

I was interviewed for the television a week back. The day was a bad one and I had been struggling with this one panel. Idea was that I would draw for the camera like the trained monkey I am, but things got a bit more interesting when I had to cut away the upper part of the panel. I was pretty sure I would have to re-draw the whole thing but the next day I managed to salvage the panel. I will later share the link of the actual process, but this is the final panel from page 6 of issue 35. You might notice the places I have cut along.

Are you a millionare? Because I need money to finish this book.

So far

Starting issue 35 has been slow. Been trying to find some work and then other stuff too. 3 interviews on Läskimooses. One for television. Had to verbalise a lot of things that I hadn't before. Then last week finally some progress with the issue. Now 5 pages finished. Hopefully I will get back to form next week.
Here some sketches:

Here we are then. Issue 35 has been slow to start but I now have 3 pages finished. At the moment I don't have any funding for the project but pretty sure I will be able to finish this issue in more or less normal schedule. Thing is all I can do is the thing I do and then to teach. I'm not that excellent in illustration and graphic design is impossible this day and age. So teaching it is. As much as possible. And it's ok.

Returning to Läskimooses. My publisher is currently scanning the 2 pager I was working on. As hard as ever to continue. Been going through some ideas for later issues and they're plenty. Plentiful. All I need is a chance to work on this monster. There are some pretty nice surprises coming along and then I will tie the bundle together in rather a nifty way.

Teaching more

I've mostly been teaching this week. And it is good. Maybe I should stick to this? Well...
2 days remaining.

Monday, December 12, 2016

This week I'm teaching at Theatre Academy in Helsinki. Teaching has become an important part of my life. More than a means to an end. And I would need an extra class for 2017 in order to make ends meet...but... choices are limited. At the moment I have 3 regular classes: freehand drawing on tuesdays at the open university, comics also at the open university and comics 3 at the day school of Aalto. Comics 3 is actually ending and the group is preparing their final works and new students can apply in May, I think. Anyways that leaves monday thursday and friday free for some class, if one should show up. Ofcourse I could compensate by selling art, but my art hasn't been in high demand.

Saturday, December 10, 2016

While working on the book I get these new separate ideas. Like the pretty funny set of superheroes whom I would place within the world of Läskimooses. And other ideas for several several new series. And three times I've tried to find funding to start new series drawn and written by different people. All stories intervining with each other. And I know this would work. Maybe the time will come. Maybe after Läskimooses I pick one of these ideas and bring it further. First I'll have to reach after Läskimooses.

Reading surviving

The book is missing 3 yrs of work. 3 yrs and then all the editing and adding and all that. I read some issues, some from the beginning, some from the middle. And it's not that bad. It'll be with the corrections the book I'm most happy I did. Eventually. So 3 yrs ahead. Next year (if I should be able to bring the main story to a turning point, 2018 the conclusion of the main story more or less. Then a four issue Kalevala special and then the final four or so issues. Not many things I can cut off and this'll span 1200 pgs minimum. It was supposed to be an experiment and there is a lot of interesting stuff I've encountered. But...three years. And the schedule here depends on the luck I'll have with grants. Already now I'm in a spot where I really should find at least one more class or some other paying job. And ofcourse that's time out of the book. And it drags on. But I see the ending and it really isn't a disappointment. A cool sort of ending that I won't give away.

Corrections and editing

It was the idea when starting that when the series is finished I will edit it and correct mistakes. Now this correction seems to mean correcting the grammar and correcting the parts of the story that don't work for whatever reason. I know of three spots where the text is inadequate and I would like to work on it. Due to the process of working and due to the fact that this thing isn't really bringing in any money - more of the contrary - the natural place to do these corrections is when the book is translated to English and published in three or four volumes. Well for the moment there aren't anyone jumping to the oppurtunity and most likely this won't happen before the book is finished, but in a way I'm all set. There have been disappointments, but plan is to continue even if I can only do four issue next year and the thing drags on. I'll adjust.

Basically ready to give up. At least two yrs remaining of this craziness. Feels more like a mental illness than anything else. On the other hand there are quite nifty stuff coming along. Stuff I'd like to tell. Decisions decisions.

Wednesday, November 30, 2016

I continue the 2 pager and now starting to feel confident. Still requires 7 panels and some texts. Then translation to English and the colors. Should be titled THE SETTING OF THE LIGHT.

The story takes place between some panels in issue 23.

This thing

Working on a thing for A magazine. Two pages approximately 20 panels. As usual I'm working in the same size that it'll be published. Small panels, but I got a nice start. Should take a week to draw, couple of days to translate anď couple of days to color. I'm already getting ideas for Läskimooses.

Wednesday, November 23, 2016

You know that moment when you are positive that you can't draw that you can't write? You know it? Well the moment is now.

trying 34

Thought up a concept for a new book. I have these waiting in line, but this is somewhat different. There's a possibility to go to new directions. Textwise mostly. Oh well...Läskimooses will require 3 or 4 yrs and who knows after that. And I know I won't have time and or opportunity to start and finish all the things I would really like to do. It's not possible unfortunately. But I would like to do one piece of depth and layers and truth.

My second oil

I'm going to try some things. Maybe do some more. This is 60x60 cm. Soon for sale at Taidelainaamo.

Thursday, November 17, 2016

Issue 34 has gone really well. Next week it  should be finished. After that I'm going to do a 2 pgr for one magazine, think the first draft of the script is now done. But Läskimooses...yes moving along. A weird trip. Have to do it one issue at time. Most missing pieces now found which doesn't mean there won't be changes. And page 1000 getting closer. I will let you know when this happens.
Quite happy with the current storyline, one of the main storylines in the book. Things are building up to certain points. In only few issues you'll know more. Excelsior!

Wednesday, November 16, 2016

A piece that was not on its place fell to its place and so the issues to follow issue 33 are:
-34, Lieskan ensileimaus
-35, Kullan kirkastuminen
-36, (material from powerbook)
-37, I'm with stupid
-38, (monkey business)
This clarified a lot for me. The story of Agner Mang split in two and concluded only after issue 38 with:
-39, Säteiden neuvosto
-40, (Helvetillisiä juttuja)

-41, (what happened to Fu on earth)
-42, Kappaleiden kokoomus
-43, Viimeisten aikojen alussa
-44, Finiittien nousu least 10 issues more

Haha, looks like It's not going to be 50 issues and 1200 pages. More like 55. Maybe not 60.

Friday, November 11, 2016

4 yrs

So 2017 I will work on Läskimooses and reach issue 42 maybe, 2018 I will work on Läskimooses and reach issue 49 maybe, 2019 I will work on Läskimooses and reach the end of the story, 2020 I will work on the book of additions and finish it maybe. Then 4 yrs gone and maybe new president in U.S.A.

Saturday, October 29, 2016

First there's the book proper version 1 which will run a further 15 issues and reach 1200 pages maybe more. Second comes version 2, an edited book format or not with some added pages and corrected grammar. Third there's the actual book of additions with very cool stories (Kullervo) that didn't quite make the book, fragments... all sorts of drawing and writing. This is how I see at the moment and yes I'm excited.
